Last week I starting going to the gym on a semi-regular basis again, thanks in large part to a co-worker who had coincidentally been thinking about starting again after his own long absence. I knew my absence had been too long after the first time we worked on legs. After four sets of squats with an embarrassingly light weight, I could feel the soreness setting in immediately. For the next two days, it was like someone was ramming a dagger into my thigh every time I sat down or got up—especially after a few hours of sitting at my desk. I won't even describe what it was like to climb stairs.
One week and another go at the squat rack later, the post-workout soreness is still there, but it's not nearly as bad. This is cause for optimism.
Tomorrow we're going to try working on abs for the first time. This is cause for dread.
